Research practices: In this module, a research-based approach is developed on the basis of an individual project. By means of individual project work, an initial application of concrete research practice is developed and the reflection of methodological approaches to one's own subject area is tested. The project work is based on personal interests and is oriented towards individual practical approaches and procedures. Conceptual skills are combined with theoretical and methodological competencies. The project is continued in a further module (Research Practices 2) in the following semester.

Research contexts: This seminar delves into the diverse realms of knowledge production, with a particular focus on situating art and design within this rich landscape. Exploring the historical evolution of various research methodologies, especially within the realm of art and design, it aims to shed light on their development over time. An integral aspect of the seminar is its examination of mediality — both within the research process itself and in the dissemination of its findings. This entails probing the intricate relationships between the phenomena under investigation, the respective fields of knowledge and practice, different methodological approaches, and potential outcomes. Moreover, the seminar delves into the moral and ethical dimensions inherent in research, aiming to critically assess the role of the researcher within the research project and its processes. By problematizing this role, it seeks to foster a deeper understanding of the responsibilities and implications associated with research endeavors. Furthermore, participants will have the opportunity to engage with a curated selection of research projects and approaches, drawn from both institutional contexts and the broader national and international communities. Through these discussions, attendees will gain valuable insights into the diverse array of research practices shaping the contemporary landscape of art and design.

Research methods: The main focus of "Research methods - basics," lies on the introduction to various relevant research traditions and practices (artistic, artistic-scientific, scientific) and their methods. Students learn about tools and strategies for research and writing, the reception of texts, the identification and handling of sources, information, data, and (open-access) archives as well as databases. An approach to experimental research practices is rehearsed by way of engaging with selected "techniques" and themes, as well as previously less recognized methods - such as foot-noting, critical fabulation, collective reading, autotheory, etc. Students also gain an initial understanding of methods of collaboration as well as individual working styles and rhythms.
