Fictions are Facts

The word «fact,» which derives from the Latin «facere» (to do, make, produce), refers to the manufactured character of the factual. This does not mean that facts are products of fantasy. Discussions about “alternative facts” make it clear, however, that facts must be defended against the suspicion of being mere inventions. But how, exactly, can the factual be separated from the fictional?
