Through a composition of readings from philosophy, poetry, detective literature and fiction we look into monsters, spirits, deities, saints, ghosts related to cure, care and justice on one side, and to stories of people affected by tourism growth on the other. At the same time, we will remotely connect and try to establish relationships with local actors in Sicily. The goal is to create two working groups that will be respectively collecting two kinds of stories: 1. stories from and about tourism, guests and hosts in the particular geography and 2. stories about more-than-human entities, ghosts and spirits that connect or could possibly connect to the place, on the other. Through discussions, literature research and speculation, we will attempt to go deeper to the origins of these stories, find possible connections and ways to preserve them and treat them respectfully.

We will think together on questions around the need and the problematics of bringing personal narrative elements into the research process, we will practice storylistening and storytelling, we will work on creating portraits (textual, visual, audio, other) of humans and more-than-human entities, and we will focus on impacts of exctractivism and tourism on the spiritual ecology of places.

The lab is also preparation for a project week that will take place in the Spring Semester (tbd).
