An Introduction to Postcolonial and Decolonial theory.
In this module, we'll develop theoretical foundations for a postcolonial and decolonial perspective on design. We'll learn about key concepts and topics in postcolonial studies and decolonial theory: modernity/coloniality; exoticism/othering; identity/hybridity; appropriation/appreciation; archives and museums; aesthetics/aisthesis.
Using this vocabulary, we will examine the colonial entanglements of 'Western' design, explore transcultural design practices, and engage with design concepts and traditions from the majority world.
Alongside historical examples, we will also discuss the role of design in the global present.
