This seminar examines the role of collecting in shaping artistic and institutional landscapes. Students will explore different types of collections—private, institutional, and museum—while analyzing their stakeholders, functions, and funding structures. We will consider collecting as both an archival practice and a funding tool, alongside various models of display and public-private partnerships. Through case studies and discussions, the seminar introduces artistic intervention tactics and curatorial strategies that engage with collections, questioning their narratives, accessibility, and impact on the public sphere.

Meetings with collectors and visits to different collections will provide first-hand insights into collecting practices and their intersections with artistic production and exhibition-making.
